Let’s talk about Celery!

Everyone’s familiar with celery, we use it in soups and salads, or as an addition to that perfect egg or tuna sandwich, even as a snack with peanut butter or melted cheese (not that processed stuff).

So where did it come from, and just how healthy is it?

Celery originated in salt marshes around the Mediterranean basin. Archaeologists have found remains of Celery in Egyptian tombs and it was considered a holy plant. Many cultures have used celery for its medicinal qualities treating ailments like colds, flu, and indigestion. Celery started to become popular as a food staple much the way we use it now in the 1600’s. Different varieties have become popular for their taste, ability to grow in specific climates, soil conditions and seasons.

Celery is now known to be very healthy and can help with weight loss and digestion. It fights cancer, reduces heartburn, cholesterol and blood pressure. It acts as an anti-inflammatory and has over 12 different nutrients that act as anti-oxidants. It’s loaded with beta carotene, phytonutrients, vitamins A, C & K, magnesium, potassium, iron and sodium. Celery is a natural anti-septic and eliminates bladder disorders, kidney problems, and urinary tract infections in women. And here’s a mouthful for you, celery has pectin-based polysaccharides, which have shown to decrease stomach ulcers and improve the stomach lining.

Now to a note of caution, celery can induce uterine contractions and bleeding. There’s also some information that suggests too much celery can cause miscarriages, so pregnant or breast feeding women should use celery sparingly or temporarily remove it from their diets.
