Let’s talk Cilantro! Coriandum Sativum

Cilantro and Coriander come from the same plant, but aren’t exactly the same thing. In North America, we usually refer to the leaves and stems of the plant as Cilantro, while the seeds are called Coriander. The rest of the world refers to the different parts of the plant as Coriander and Coriander Seed.
Let’s stick with the North American version for now.

Coriander is a delicious spice described as a rich, warm nutty flavour with a hint of citrus, often paired with spices like cinnamon and cumin. Meanwhile, Cilantro has a fragrant, fresh citrusy taste and aroma.

Some people have a strong aversion to Cilantro, describing it as foul, or soapy, and most of those share a genetic trait (There you go, it’s not your fault!).

Maybe you already knew that, maybe you didn’t, but here’s something interesting, Cilantro and Coriander have different nutrient profiles. Cilantro is much higher in vitamins, while Coriander has higher levels of minerals.
Studies have also shown that Cilantro has chelating properties that bind with heavy metals like Mercury, Lead, Nickel, Cadmium and Uranium, allowing your body to flush these metals out the good old fashioned way. A number of our clients subscribe to a water and Cilantro fasting cleanse several times a year.
